4/11/2023 0 Comments A goofy movieI really don’t think I went to the premiere, but I could be wrong. That was right when I’m Ready and all that was out … but there was so much going on back then. There’s a lot of stuff that I don’t remember from those days I’ve sort of, I don’t know, self-consciously blocked out or whatnot. To tell you the truth, I don’t remember going and I’m probably wrong about that. Tevin Campbell: Did I go? I don’t even remember going. Josh Weiss: To the best of your memory, what can you remember about the premiere and subsequent reaction to the movie back in 1995? I wish I was still in touch with them, but yeah, they wrote some really, really powerhouse. The writers, they just wrote the hell out of the songs. Tevin Campbell: I appreciate that, thank you. Those are two of my favorite songs in the whole world. I actually listen to ‘Stand Out’ and ‘I-2-I’ while I’m working all the time. The best part, to me, is when Powerline takes the stage, but I like it when they’re all onstage together when Goofy comes onstage and Powerline is like, ‘Ok.’ kind of takes over and joins him, I like that part. I like the movie, the whole movie’s great, but I gotta be a little selfish. Tevin Campbell: I like the musical numbers. Josh Weiss: Aside from your own contributions, do you have a favorite moment from the movie? But yeah, I did some dance moves at the green screen, they just had me move around and just be myself. I think they sort of took from a lot of people: Michael Jackson, you got Bobby Brown, you got all kinds of people that they took away from as far as dances, because I really wasn’t a dancer. I was more of a dancer back then, I did choreography, but I was nothing like Powerline. Tevin Campbell: Yeah, they just had me do some dance moves and I doubt if they based any of Powerline’s dance moves off of me. What else went into the recording process and creating the character? Josh Weiss: You touched on the green screen earlier. It was up in the Hills at the producer’s house, so it was really cool and laid back … It was good times. We did both songs two separate days and it was just a lot of fun. I remember the recording sessions really clearly. No one told me how to sing it, but I came in and did my thing. Tevin Campbell: Yeah, it was already written and they asked me to just sing it. Josh Weiss: Speaking of the music, did you have a hand at all in turning them into what they became, or it was just already written and they just asked you to sing it? I think they just kind of built around the songs, really and built the songs around Powerline. That’s pretty much all I remember about it … but I think mainly, they wanted me to sing those songs and then Powerline was just something they created, they didn’t really need me for. The only thing I really remember is being in the studio, recording the songs and going to the actual Disney Studios and them showing me the Goofy and I had to get in front of a green screen and do some stuff. How old was I? I was 19 or 20-something like that and so, I don’t really remember too much. Tevin Campbell: Well, I was so young, oh my god. Josh Weiss: Can you start by giving me a brief rundown of how you got cast as Powerline in A Goofy Movie?
